VHS (Video Home System) was what everyone used to watch movies at home from the late 1970s through the early 2000s. Movies and shows would be sold or rented on magnetic tapes played through a VCR (videocassette recorder) hooked up to a TV. You could even record onto a VHS using your VCR right from your TV!
What is a DVD?
DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) is an optical disc format that replaced VHS starting in the late 1990s. Movie companies would usually make both DVD and VHS. They even had DVD/VCR combo units so you could play both. And yes even some of them let you record between tape and DVD. By like 2005 nobody was making VHS tapes anymore. DVD stores video digitally instead of on tape, giving sharper picture quality and features like scene selection and bonus menus. Funny enough the DVD format was pretty much the same as VHS on paper . both are 4:3, interlaced, ~30fps (NTSC) video . the real difference is DVD stored that signal digitally instead of as analog magnetic tape, which is what actually gave it the sharper, noise-free picture.

¹ VHS's actual horizontal resolution is much lower than DVD's (roughly 240 analog lines vs. DVD's full 720×480) . the frame dimensions match, the fidelity doesn't. PAL (Europe) regions used 720×576 at 25fps for both formats instead.
Wait, what do NTSC, PAL, fps, interlaced, etc. even mean?
Fair, that spec table above is basically alphabet soup. Quick translations:
NTSC - the TV standard North America, Japan, and a few other countries used. Video runs at 29.97 frames per second (casuals round it to 30).
PAL - the TV standard most of Europe, Africa, and Australia used. Runs at 25fps instead of 30. The real reason for the split: it's tied to how fast the local power grid alternates (60Hz in NTSC countries, 50Hz in PAL ones) - old TVs synced their picture to that.
fps (frames per second) - how many still images flash by per second to fake smooth motion. Movie theaters use 24fps, old TV used 25 or 30fps, and modern video games can run at 60fps or higher.
Interlaced - an old trick to save bandwidth: instead of drawing a whole frame at once, the TV draws all the odd horizontal lines, then all the even lines, super fast, and your eyes blend them together. Modern "progressive" screens just draw the whole frame in one go.
Anamorphic - squishing a widescreen 16:9 picture horizontally so it fits into a 4:3 frame, then having the player stretch it back out when it plays. It's how DVDs fit widescreen movies without wasting picture space.
MPEG-2 - the compression format DVDs use to shrink video small enough to fit on a disc without it looking like garbage.
PCM / Dolby Digital - ways of storing the audio. PCM is uncompressed (like a WAV file), Dolby Digital is compressed surround sound - that's how some DVDs squeeze in 5.1 surround while old VHS tapes could barely manage stereo.
